In an earlier post, I talked about White Water Mold (WWM) and Pink Slime (PS) in Spas & hot tubs. As we have discovered, these 2 problems are the result of "out of control" build-ups of Bio film. Although the picture shows an inground pump basket caked with PS & WWM. It is as nasty as it looks.
The question is: how do you get rid of, then prevent it from coming back? The thing is, by the time you actually see it in your spa, it has done a good job permeating virtually every square inch of plumbing lines, pump housings, and the backs of every hydro therapy jet. White Water Mold & Pink Slime grows & builds on top of growing & spreading bio films; you can't have one without the other.
To effectively rid your spa or hot tub of WWM & PS (and therefore bio film) you MUST Purge, Drain & Refill the spa.
Follow these 3 Steps whenever you Drain & Refill your spa:
1. Purge the spa of anything in the lines. Add Natural Chemistry Spa Purge, Swirl Away, AquaFinesse Spa Clean
Tablets or Whirlpool Rinse to the spa. Allow to run overnight, about 12 hours or
so. These products will aid in removing the existing bio film. Don't be
surprised if the water gets NASTY looking. You can purchase these products here.
2. Drain & physically clean all fittings, pillows, skimmer & filter areas, etc. Remember to THOROUGHLY CLEAN the filter cartridge - you don't want that stuff getting back into the spa!
3. Refill the spa.
In case of bad infestations or if the spa is older than 5 years old & you've never done this before, I strongly recommend repeating the procedure. As you can see in the picture below, the spa water should get nasty looking. Keep in mind that the spa pictured is a brand new spa that was purged & drained before initial start up! Where did all of that bio film come from? It came from sitting in a warehouse for several months prior to delivery. All the bio film needed to grow was a little moisture and a surface; that's it.
Prevention? That's another story. Can Spa Mold & Pink Slime be prevented: YES. Proper maintenance of sanitizing & water balancing procedures will prevent those 2 issues. The Bio-film is another issue. The bottom line is bio-films will always grow. Always. Bio films in spas & hot tubs is like plaque on your teeth. In fact, dental plaque is a bio-film. It's bacteria growing& spreading on a surface. The only 2 proven products that will actually prevent bio-film growth are AquaFinesse or SpaNaturally. They work.
By Purging, Draining & Refilling your spa on a regular basis (every 2 - 4 months, depending on usage) you will prevent the bio-film from building up to the degree that you have odor, foaming & other problems.
