Yeah, Dust bunnies & Water bugs... Almost every pool has them!
Worse yet, there's no real way to get rid of them. Each is a nuisance in it's one right.
First Dust bunnies. Dust bunnies are simple agglomerations - a fancy word for bunches - of pollen, dirt, tree dust, bugs, and dirt. Nothing more. Nothing less.
They accumulate in the corners of your pool. You can vacuum them up and, more than likely, they'll be back the following day.
If you have poplar trees in your neighborhood, even up to about a half mile away, the fine dust and pollen that these trees "shed" from the end of June to mid July, ends up in your pool. It's wispy and simply accumulates in to these masses of ... dust bunnies. That's all they are. You can see what they look like in the video.
Now Water bugs, they're a different story.
Water bugs are, obviously, naturally occurring. They can swim under water or "skate" across the surface of the pool. They don't bite. They're just a nuisance and many people (entomophobics) just don't like them.
But have no fear, there are ways to keep them at bay.
The first way is to break the surface tension of the water. Keep it moving. Make sure that you're using a good quality algaecide on a weekly basis. Most algaecides are good surfactants; they make water "wetter". By making the water wetter, you prevent the water bugs from grabbing hold of some air and attaching it to their bodies. Without that air bubble, they can't swim under water.
That's a brief synopsis. Enjoy the video.
