That's right! You've got to shock your pool. There's no getting around it...
If you don't regularly shock your pool, whether it's a chlorine or bromine sanitized pool, or a biguanide product such as BioGuard Soft Swim or Arch Chemical Baquacil, or an ionizing system such as Pool Frog or Nature2, or even a salt/chlorine generating system, you're asking for cloudy water, algae, burning eyes or worse.
Shocking your pool on a regular, weekly or bi-weekly basis does so much for you. I'm not just pushing a chemical sale on you, I'm trying to save you time, money and a whole bunch of aggravation.
In a nutshell, shocking helps rid your pool of organic & inorganic wastes. Shocking breaks the chemical bond that turns "good" chlorine (FAC - Free Available Chlorine) into "bad" chlorine(CC - Combined Chlorine or Chloramines).
Many pool owners think that they only need to shock their pool when it is opened or closed, but regular weekly or bi-weekly shocking oxidizes swimmer waste (from sweat, make-up & lotions), environmental waste (bird droppings, wind blown algae, excessive rain, etc) or organic slimes that can come in through your garden hose.
Shocking can easily prevent cloudy water, algae, eye & skin irritation (caused by lack of FAC and an abundance of CC). Regular Shocking does so much good in so little time. But so many neglect this simple step thinking that they're saving themselves money.
Take a look at the video and learn why shocking is a very necessary step of good pool care. If you perform regular shocking, you'll almost eliminate the need to do "Break-point" Chlorination or deal with a Chlorine Demand problem. I'll explain it all.
After the video, you'll find links to indepth articles, easy to read brochures & other information.
Chlorine demand - what chlorine demand is. How important it is treat to it completely.
Algae - algae growth will use more chlorine. Here's a video.
Cloudy water - find out the causes. Take a look at a video.

My pool (80F) is growing tiny little bugs that seem to "fly" in the water. I shocked the poo, and they disappear for a while. A few days later, the chlorine level dropped a little -still reads pretty high- the bugs came back. If I add chlorine I will not be able to use the pool.
Is this common and is there an easy solution to this problem?
