The 2nd Key to Good Spa Care is Filtration.
If you want to "reuse" water over & over again for a period of months, you've got to Filter the water. You've got to filter out the stuff you don't want to soak in. I don't mean to be graphic, but when you have more than one person using a spa or hot tub, you're going to have "stuff" getting into the water. And a lot of that stuff has to be removed through filtration.
So what am I talking about that needs to be filtered? Well, there's dirt & dust that either natural blow in or that you track in on your feet. Then there's body hair, dead skin cells, body oils - need I go on?
Let's take a look at the video:
But it's not just good filtration, it's also necessary to properly clean & then eventually change your spa filter cartridge. Like all filters, they're made to remove "undesirables" from the environment.
Depending on how many people are using the spa each week, you'll determine how often it will be necessary to clean the filter. And by cleaning, I don't just mean rinsing. Cleaning means CLEANING - use an appropriate filter cleaner to break up & remove dirt, greases and oils.
DON'T use household cleaners or detergents, they weren't made for that purpose. If your filter cartridge is treated with Microban material (an anti-bacterial coating), be sure to only use cleaners such as AquaFinesse Filter Cleaner or Natural Chemistry Filter Perfect. Neither of these cleaners will significantly break down the Microban coating as other filter cleaners can or will.
DON'T put your filter cartridge in the dishwasher, you'll shorten the life of the material. Your should consider replacing the cartridge every 2 years or so. To put that into perspective: how often do you purchase new socks or underwear? Your spa's filter cartridge also wears out...
DO soak or clean your filter cartidge about every 4 to 6 weeks. Clean & rinse it well. Use a Filter Flosser for deep rinsing & removal of particles that get way into the pleats. By the way, allow the filter cartridge to completely dry if possible before reinstalling it. This is a good reason why you may want to consider having two or a second set.
Keep in mind that you get what you pay for in a filter cartridge. It seems as if everybody wants cheaper & cheaper products. Yes, some spa cartridges ARE indeed cheaper, but did you know that some of the difference is in the weight of the fabric? There is 4 oz and 3 oz material (and even lighter). The heavier the material, the more it costs, the better it lasts. Can you see or tell the difference? No, not really. But you get what you pay for. Here are the replacement filter cartridges that we offer.
