Legionnaires' disease is a serious health problem.
Put very briefly, Legionnaires's disease is a very controllable air/water borne health issue that can be controlled with proper maintenance. Unfortunately, it took a vicious and fatal outbreak of this serious disease for the health authorities to take notice and do something about it.
Inhaling the water vapor or mist containing or infected with legionella can result in serious health issues such as pneumonia and worse.
Why is ParPools.com interested in letting you know about Legionnaires' disease? Simply put, we're interested because you could facilitating the growth of this disease in your own backyard pool or spa and you wouldn't even know it.
For several years ParPools.com has been trumpeting the need to control, treat and remove biofilms from swimming pools and hot tubs. Legionnaire's disease grows (can grow) readily in untreated and poorly maintained water containment vessels (primarily water towers or air conditioning coolers).
As we've written on numerous occassions, biofilms are naturally occurring films of biological organisms that grow on moist surfaces (many metals, almost all plastics). With that in mind, the surfaces (those that you can touch and clean and those you can't such as the plumbing of your spa or pool) of any water holding or transmitting vessel can provide the breeding grounding for a variety of bacteria. Granted most of it (almost all of it) is NOT harmful, but why take the chance? Why not just treat it?
