Every swimming pool owner or operator wants ONE thing: CRYSTAL CLEAR, easy to maintain pool water. Period.
But it doesn't end there. You need to support these pillars with solid foundations otherwise the pillars will fail and fall; sometimes hard, usually over time.
The Five Pillars
Control Bacteria. The primary concern of swimming pool water care is to control bacteria. We can never fully eliminate it (them), but through proper sanitizing products & techniques, bacteria can certainly be well controlled. Bacteria are literally everywhere and need to be killed & controlled by using: Chlorine, Salt, Bromine, Biguanides (Soft Swim®, Baquacil®, etc.), Pristine Blue®, etc. Proper levels of sanitizers continually aid in killing bacteria.
Prevent Algae. Algae are everywhere & need to be killed & controlled by using: Preventative Algaecides & Algistats, Quats, Poly-quats, Copper based algaecides. Algaecides help to prevent algae blooms that result in cloudy & green water.
Oxidize Waste. Swimmer and natural environmental wastes & contaminants that contribute to bacteria and algae growth: Body lotions & oils, Make-up, Perspiration, "stuff" from dead leaves, etc., “Fly-ins” (bird or animal droppings, etc). Weekly or bi-weekly shocking (super chlorination in chlorine or bromine treated pools or the addition of Hydrogen Peroxide in biguanide pools only) of the pool helps to eliminate this waste.
Maintain Good Water Balance. Maintain the correct levels that contribute to water balance: pH, Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness, Total Dissolved Solids. Well balanced & maintained pool water promotes swimmer comfort (dry skin or hair, eye irritation, etc.), longer pool surface and equipment life & more efficient sanitizer use. Weekly home testing is typically all that is needed to maintain this balance. Adjust the levels as necessary. Professional testing should be done at least every 4 to 6 weeks.
Proper Cleaning & Filtration. Proper and sufficient filtration removes excess dirt, debris & dead particles from the water: Sand, Cartridge, DE filters. 8 to 12 hours of Daily filter operation as well as regular vacuuming, brushing & removing excess leaves and debris from pool opening to closing prevents many pool water problems. Why? Because all of that unwanted debris contains bacteria & algae, thereby using more chemicals to kill, prevent and control algae blooms, cloudy water, and otherwise "unhealthy" conditions. Always remove debris prior to shocking for the most effective results.
The 3 Foundations to pool water care support the pillars. Like any building, the more firm or solid the foundation, the more secure the pillars. After several years of successful recommendation and use with all kinds of pools and customers across the United States, these foundations are, well, foundational. They make a significant difference in pool water care and quality. Watch the video, then continue reading.
Remove & Control Biofilms. Biofilms contain up to 99% of bacteria found in swimming pools. Biofilms typically hide in your pool's plumbing lines, filter system, under ladder treads, etc. Ridding the pool (and keeping them from growing out of control, becoming mold and slime problems) of as much as the biofilms present results in a reduction of santizer, oxidizer and algaecide use and consumption. Pool surfaces stay cleaner. Your swimming and bathing experience is enhanced. ParPools.com has found that AquaFinesse Pool Water Care Tablets are the best product in continually combating and treating biofilms. Stopping or pausing treatment will allow the biofilm to become re-established.
Using Borates. Borate products are sort of the unsung hero in successfully preventing and treating algae. For whatever chemical reason, borates interfere with algae's ability to produce food (photosynthesis) and consume food (metabolism). As an added bonus, borates have been found to be an excellent anti-fungal (pool or white water mold). And if that weren't enough, borates cause the water to feel silky smooth and further buffer both the pH and Total Alkalinity. Borates only downside: they are cannot be used in the state of California (don't ask...). ParPools.com recommended product: BioGuard Optimizer Plus.
Using Enzymes. Enzymes, especially broad spectrum enzymes, aid in naturally consuming common greases, oils and other contaminants (provide food for bacteria & biofilms) that would otherwise result in icky looking water lines (bathtub ring), shortened filter cycles (more frequent backwashing or cleaning or changing of filters). Blended enzyme products can also greatly reduce the amounts of phosphates (another food source for algae). People who use good quality enzyme products discover little to no water line build up plus cleaner pool toys. ParPools.com recommended product: NaturCare Enzymatic Cleaner & Phosphate Remover.
