The winter of 2011 - 2012 has been blessing to many of us.
Lower heating costs. Lower, maybe no, costs for snow plowing & removal. Less damage to our homes & property.
All of that was especially good considering the higher & continually rising gas prices, continued high unemployment and other economic concerns.
But with a warm winter and early spring comes some extra care for swimming pools. Although it's been warm since mid March, many of us will still not open our swimming pools until we usually do: mid to late May.
What does all of that mean? Algae growth. And I don't mean simple algae growth, I mean green, murky pools. Why? The reason is pretty simple.

Yup, dog pools...
As holistic animal health becomes more common place for our pets, there are a growing number of "health clubs" for canines.
If you've ever owned a pet, and dogs in particular, you know that they need exercise. This is especially so if your canine companion is older, or dealing health issues such as arthritis. I remember my father in law's golden retriever Tyler. He was a great pet and companion for my in-laws in their later years. But like many goldens, Tyler suffered from arthritis as he got older. If he had a pool available, it probably would have made it easier or more comfortable for him in last years.

More evidence linking aquatic exercise and health has been uncovered in a study published recently in the American Journal of Cardiology.
Titled Effects of Swimming Training on Blood Pressure and Vascular Function in Adults over 50 Years of Age, the study concluded that swimming exercise lowered blood pressure and improved vascular function in a sample of previously sedentary older adults.

A very popular question we get is, "how many hours do I run my pool pump each day?"
Usually, we tell pool owners that between 8 and 12 hours is a good rule of thumb. The next question is "when?"
Many people want to run their pool filter system only at night in order save on electricity during off-peak hours. That's not a bad idea, but it's not the best.
In an ideal world where cost wasn't an issue, running your pool pump 24 hours a day, 7 seven days each week from pool opening to closing, is the best way to care for your pool. Those folks who follow this routine have few if any water quality problems; instead they have a huge electric bill...
But there is a happy medium!

Don't blame the Chlorine!
ANDERSLOV, Sweden -- Several blond residents of a southern Swedish town were left with green hair after an unusual reaction between the water supply and the shower system of a number of new homes.
via www.foxnews.com
You'll notice there's no mention of chlorine or low pH.
Chlorine will not and does not turn blonde hair green unless there are other problems such as low pH & dissolved copper present.

Owning a pool should be mandatory!
That's right, mandatory. Swimming pools are great household amenities.
Swimming pools provide a central place for family fun & exercise, life-long memories and so much more. In fact, swimming pools - any kind of pool aboveground, inground, onground - are not just a symbol of luxury for the rich, they provide real functionality in times of distress or emergency.
In times of drought, swimming pools often times get a bad rap for "using" or "wasting" water. Nothing could be further from the truth!

Well, thank goodness Irene has passed & is out of here!
For many folks up and down the East Coast, the weekend of August 26 - 28, 2011, starring Hurricane Irene was a wild ride.
Tons of rain. Strong & damaging winds.
We rushed to store everything away, Hurricane Irene came & went. Now it's time to put our property and our lives back together. By Sunday afternoon, many of us were able to get out and start the clean up process. That process also includes our swimming pools.
For many, the pool collected some leaves & twigs (like mine above). For others, let's just say there was a lot more. Now comes the rest of the clean up (get your home, yard & other important chores done first; the pool can wait a little bit).
