10 Reasons to Believe in a Historical Adam

In recent years, several self-proclaimed evangelicals, or those associated with evangelical institutions, have called into question the historicity of Adam and Eve. It is said that because of genomic research we can no longer believe in a first man called Adam from whom the entire human race has descended.

I'll point to some books at the end which deal with the science end of the question, but the most important question is what does the Bible teach. Without detailing a complete answer to that question, let me suggest ten reasons why we should believe that Adam was a true historical person and the first human being.

1. The Bible does not put an artificial wedge between history and theology. Of course, Genesis is not a history textbook or a science textbook, but that is far from saying we ought to separate the theological wheat from the historical chaff. Such a division owes to the Enlightenment more than the Bible.

Whiter Than Snow

Our THIRD snow storm in 3 weeks! I love the change of seasons but, I think the site of swaying palm trees about now would be a good thing.

Throughout all of my years I've been living in and dealing with winter in Connecticut. Sometimes it's really pretty. Most of the time it's kind of on the dank and gray side.

Back in the mid 1990's I signed up to help my brother plow snow. My job was to clear about a 2 - 3 acre area of our local airport with the company backhoe. Hour after hour. Back and forth. Had to keep an eye on not getting too close to the planes that were parked in this area. Several of those storms that year dumped in excess of 12 inches. It was a long, cold winter.

Acts and Apologetics: the Unbeliever's Worldview

The Christian worldview of life is, for all purposes, straight forward. It's not that believers are automatons, but we "view" the world and universe around us through the only eyes that matter: God's eyes.

The unbeliever on the other hand looks at the world very differently. He looks at it through his own eyes. Virtually everything he (or she) sees or experiences - visible and invisible, perceived and actual, logical and illogical - is seen through their own filter.

There is no single "unbelievers" worldview. Like Paul in first century Athens dealing with Epicureans and Stoics (Acts 17), the Apostle understood the basic tenants of their philosophy of living and was able to reason and persuasively argue with these "learned" men.
